FAQ

What is a phone lock?

The lock is really a software code that's put on the phone by the manufacturer as per the requirement of the carrier that sells the device. The "lock" is meant to ensure that the phone can't be used on any other operator's network until a different software code is entered to unlock the device. One of the main purposes of this factory lock is to discourage and prevent you from changing your cell phone service to a different network provider. All GSM devices are designed so that service is provisioned using a SIM card. With an unlocked device, a GSM smartphone can be reprovisioned and used on another network simply by popping out the old SIM card and putting in a new one from the new carrier. The carrier doesn't  need to be notified, and the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours or even a day or two.

Is My Cell Phone Currently Locked?

Unless you purchased a phone or device specifically sold as "unlocked" at the point of purchase, you should assume that it is locked to a specific service provider's network. This is true whether you purchase the device from a service provider, at a general retail outlet (in person or on the web), or through a third-party. These days, most mobile phones come "locked" to a particular network (i.e. Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc). This means that you will only be able to use your cell phone on the network from which it was originally purchased. For example, if you purchased a phone from Bell and later wanted to change your service provider to Rogers, your new Rogers SIM card would not work in the mobile phone you bought from Bell. This can be frustrating for several reason. It can get very expensive if you have to purchase a new cell  phone every time you change network service providers. The only solution to solve this problem is to unlock your mobile phone. It is completely legal and is a more cost effective way to get the greatest use out of your cell phone. The only reason that your network provider locks their mobile phones is to discourage and prevent you from changing your cell phone service to a different network provider.

Why unlock your cell phone?

There are many benefits to unlocking your cell phone. Network freedom is the primary reason to unlock, but money savings and increasing the value of your cell phone is also an excellent reason to unlock. An unlocked phone can recognize a SIM card from any GSM network and use that network to make calls, send messages, and other forms of data. Also, it does not come with subscriber contracts which makes it a more flexible and practical option for many people. This is also a big plus for people who frequently travel for work or leisure since it allows them to switch to other available network providers once they are out of their current provider’s coverage zone. An unlocked phone also allows a user to easily switch to a different network provider with better rates or service, especially if they are unhappy with their current cellular carrier. Since they are not tied down to a particular provider, unlocked phones give users more freedom to choose the network provider that suits their needs and budget. If on a budget, one can also use the phone with inexpensive, prepaid SIM cards, which provide cheaper call and messaging rates.

What are the explicit differences between a locked and unlocked phone?

The difference between a locked and an unlocked phone is that a locked device has a software code on it that prevents you from taking a GSM-based device and using it on another GSM carrier's network.

An unlocked phone reverses the programming put on your phone by the network so it can work with any SIM or any compatible network around the world. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM card and put in a different SIM from another GSM operator and get service. An unlocked phone also allows a user to easily switch to a different network provider with better rates or service, especially if they are unhappy with their current cellular carrier. Since they are not tied down to a particular provider, unlocked phones give users more freedom to choose the network provider that suits their needs and budget.
